What's up with this "rock foundation of a church" stuff? Do you have any clue?
Most Christians are aware of that magnificent "Petrine Confession" event. We remember Peter proclaiming that Jesus was "the Christ, the Son of the living God" somewhere. But, did you know that Jesus' play on words about the rock (Petra/Peter) may have actually had more than just a dual meaning to those assembled that day?
This event took place at Caesarea Philippi. Today that site is called Banias after the Greek god Pan. It's the headwaters of the upper Jordan. It's also the spring location that rests in the shadow of what was a 300 year old shrine to Pan in the days when Jesus and His men sat there cooling off their feet.
Did Jesus point to an old rock shrine when He talked of a church with a rock foundation? I'd love to know for sure but it seems to make sense to me.
